Each diamond fits into its own carefully cut seat.  With all the diamonds seated, the metal is gradually hammered down between the stones using great care.  The metal mushrooms out to hold the diamonds.  Most of this mushroomed metal will be removed with files and gravers, leaving just enough to hold the stones securely.
